CIVIS MEDIA CONFERENCE 2022

Journalism and Social Media: Driving Force or Driven?

Social media: On the one hand, they enlarge considerably citizens’ ways to have their say. On the other hand, the likes of Twitter and Facebook offer an almost unlimited stage for systematic lies and aggression.

The question is how the participatory potential of social networks can be realised and best protected from being overrun by destructive communication. It is a task, if not exclusively, for traditional media as well. Competition from new players is changing the perception of important areas of reporting. At the same time, television, radio, newspapers, magazines and traditional online media have long become dependent on social networks themselves.

Where in this context are social media an asset, where a danger? How do they shape the work of journalists and open up new opportunities for them? What must the industry do to stop discourses from escalating as soon as they have begun? And where should it start – on its platforms, in its communication with citizens, within its own (editorial) structures?

That was the focus of the virtual media conference of the CIVIS Media Foundation on Wednesday, 14 January 2022, 10:00 to 13:00.

These questions will be discussed at the virtual media conference of the CIVIS Media Foundation on Friday, 14 January 2022, 10:00 to 13:00.

We invite you to watch, listen, participate with questions and comments via Twitter – under the hashtag: #JournalismusundSocialMedia
