This is the story of Margot Bendheim, born in Berlin in 1921, who, unlike her family, survives persecution by the Nazis and ultimately imprisonment in Theresienstadt concentration camp. There she meets her long-time acquaintance Adolf Friedländer. After liberation, the two are married and emigrate to the USA. Margot Friedländer has been living in Berlin again since 2010 and regularly tells young people about her experiences under fascism.
Excerpt from the jury’s statement
“A film that is deeply frightening, enlightening and touching in equal measure. At the centre is a woman whose life story triggers very different emotions: despair and hope, trepidation and awakening, powerlessness and the need to act.”
