Thousands of Croatian neo-fascists and right-wing extremists from all over Europe go on pilgrimage to the Bleiburg Community in southern Carinthia, Austria each year. The aim is to commemorate a massacre of people from Croatia, who have surrendered to the British at the end of the Second World War and were extradited to the victorious communist partisans. Amongst them were many civilians, but also fascist Ustashi fighters. 23 years after the war in Yugoslavia, the pro-fascist idea in Croatia has reinvigorated, despite independence and EU-membership.
Excerpt from the jury’s statement
An excellent journalistic achievement – shocking, appalling
