They are fleeing from terror, war and poverty – and land in the hands of unscrupulous human traffickers, who abandon them to their fate, adrift in the Mediterranean. With their mission “Mare Nostrum”, the Italian navy succeeded in saving over 150,000 people in distress between Libya’s coast and Sicily in 2014. Yet the rescue operation was not without its critics, who claimed that ever more refugees would be tempted into making the hazardous crossing – usually in unseaworthy vessels. This reportage accompanies the crew of the “San Giorgio” on one of their spectacular rescue operations.
