Despite his lack of academic qualifications, a highly-gifted dance student is admitted to the Essen Folkswang University of Arts: the young Roma Safet Mistele. Whilst taking part in a school youth project, he had a chance encounter with Pina Bausch and gave her a brief audition. And the young hip-hopper eventually became a classical ballet dancer. The entrance exam is tough, the standards exacting. One of the greatest obstacles he faces is the misconception that ballet is only performed by girls or gays. Today Safet Mistele walks the red carpet at the Berlinale and travels around the world.

Excerpt from the jury’s statement
An inspiring success story – underscored with a gentle, intelligent humour.
