Nailed-up toilets, rationed bread, hunger strikes – in the “Special Care Institution” for suspected criminal applicants for political asylum on Carinthia’s Saualm, the conditions are unacceptable. The controversial home was conceived in 2008 by the then head of the provincial government, Jörg Haider, and opened few days after his death in an accident. The remote building at an altitude of 1,200 metres repeatedly hit the headlines: the provision of services supply is extremely inadequate, moreover, asylum applicants were held there who had done nothing wrong.
Excerpt from the jury’s statement
Clear criticism of the government of Carinthia, investigative, journalistically impressive, a radiophone performance.
